Newborn | utah newborn baby photographer

Lately I’ve been talking about my little brother and when we left off I had shared that a) he’s not so little any more, b) he’s scored himself a darling wife (how, don’t ask me – haha, just kidding little brother), and c) they were expecting their first ‘lil peanut.

Well, the little peanut has arrived and he’s as darling as ever! I was super stoked when my little brother asked me to photograph their little guy and since I need to make up for being a bratty older sister at times when we were kids, I gladly agreed.

Some of my favorite newborn baby photos are the details of these precious little beans….from tiny toes….

….to newborn baby fuzz….

….to little pouty lips….

….and soft eyelashes….

…and you gotta love eye contact when babies seem to stare right into your soul.

So what do you think? Isn’t he precious?

Until next time,
~Shay

Guest post with photography tips

Nowadays blogs are almost like the sand at the beach, there are so many out there that sometimes it’s hard to see the individual grains of sand. Sometimes though, the sun will glimmer against something shiny and upon closer inspection you find a gem. Perhaps it’s a smooth piece of beach glass or maybe it’s a beautiful seashell just washed ashore. You pick up the treasure and find yourself smiling automatically.

Finding and reading Suzanne’s blog Twenty Four at Heart is kinda like that. She’s unapologetically honest in her posts and isn’t afraid to share embarrassing stories. Some of her stories aren’t so embarrassing and rather will shock you with the craziness ridiculousness that California’s Orange County can be. And some of her stories will leave your heart aching for her pain. At any rate, after a short time of reading you’ll find yourself thinking she could be a friend. One that wouldn’t be afraid to tell you there was a piece of spinach in your teeth. One that would tell you like it is. One you could be your unabashed self with, and one that on occasion would say something to make you blush.

Can imagine how super stoked I was when she asked me to guest post on her blog for her weekly installment of Photography Friday?! So, click on the image below to hop on over and learn about applying the Rule of Thirds to photographing people.

Until next time,

Perfectly round belly | utah maternity photographer

Speaking of my little brother, he now has a beautiful wife and newborn baby son. Of course the newborn photos are going to be featured soon but first I needed to showcase this beautiful round belly. Somehow I think my little brother has moved on from being excited to show his colorful big fall leaf in the kindergarten show-and-tell day, to showing off his sweet wife instead.

Nick and Sarah came over for a quick maternity session to document her first pregnancy. Her belly was simply the cutest — perfectly round. She’s a tiny thing so I kept thinking she simply had stuffed a basketball under her shirt. Besides, my little brother is too, uh, little to be having kids of his own.
:)

Aren’t they so cute?!

Until next time,
~Shay

Confession

It was a sunny morning but the air was crisp with the promise of winter on the horizon. I was at the bus stop awaiting my routine ride to elementary school. The frigid air nipped at my nose, my ears, my fingers. I shifted my weight from foot to foot trying to fight off the cold, the dormant crunchy grass was like straw under my feet. I could see the bus round the corner at the top of our road and relief swept over me; soon I would be warm. The neighborhood kids vied for position in line in order to get on the bus first.

Soon the bus was in front of us and the tall doors swung open letting us climb the stairs and find a seat amongst the rows of benches. The doors swung shut and the bus began accelerating. We hadn’t gone far when suddenly a kid shrieked out, “Wait! Stop! Stop!” I looked up alarmed and discovered the shrieking kid was my little brother. He was frantically running up the center isle yelling at the bus driver, “Wait, I forgot something!” Tears started falling down his tender little kindergarten face and his wild eyes darted back and forth wondering if the driver would listen to him.

The bus driver stopped quickly in front of our home and told my little brother in an urgent voice, “Hurry fast.” My little brother didn’t waste one nanosecond. He took off like lightning down the stairs, across the street, and disappeared into the house. Not a few seconds had passed when he came tearing back towards the bus, his legs churning so fast they were almost a blur. Man, one thing was for sure, my little brother could run!

I straightened my back to peer out the window curious to see what in the world could have been so deathly urgent that my baby brother would stop the bus, full of the entire neighborhood, so he could run into our home to grab something he forgot.

In his tiny hand, flapping in the wind as he ran with all his might, his clenched fist held onto the stem of a single fall leaf.

He had found this rather large, perfectly intact and colorful fall leaf and he was dying to show it off in his class show-and-tell.

As my little brother climbed back onto the bus with a look of relief on his face, the streaks left by tears began to dry like a riverbed succumbed to drought. He wiped his nose on his sleeve, and worked his way back to his seat. I felt a pang in my heart because he was so worried about this leaf he would make everyone wait, less he not be able to show his classmates. I was a mean older sister however, and I betrayed my heart by loudly exclaiming, “You went back for a leaf?! I can’t believe you made everyone wait so you could get a leaf!” I turned to the window shaking my head.

I’m embarrassed to admit I was too worried about what the other kids would think of my little brother and by default, me. My insecurities made me want to make him feel dumb before they did. He responded with another wipe of his nose on his sleeve and a shrug of the shoulders as he sat down in his seat.

I’m sorry, little brother, for letting my insecurities overrun my heart that day. It’s one of my many not-so-proud moments.

We all have a list of them, right? The not-so-proud moments?

Until next time,
~Shay

Nick - That is quite alright. I do remember that well. To me the leaf was the size of a frizbee, but as I have grown up and seen the cottonwood leaves off of the same tree, they are more like the size of my hand now (which is still fairly large.) The story made me laugh. Thanks.

Animal Assisted Therapy – 101 Ideas

Although my mom is involved with agility training these days, when I was a little girl she was involved with obedience. On occasion she would visit different places like schools and nursing homes to give various demonstrations such as general dog training, obedience training, and proper dog care and safety.

In fact, once when I was in the fourth grade she came to my grade school to show my schoolmates one of these demonstrations. At the time I wasn’t even aware my mom had arranged to come to the school so you can imagine my surprise when suddenly our big, beautiful, kind, Dobermans came sauntering into the classroom with my mom in tow. The kids exploded in excitement and I felt my coolness status totally increase as they enthusiastically asked me questions. Given that I was a total geek (ok, I still am a total geek) I was nonetheless appreciative of any coolness my mom could rub off on me by showing how awesome our dogs were. I was so proud to stand in front of the class that day.

Another time my heart swelled with pride was when my mother took me with her to a nursing home to give a demonstration to the residents. Those sweet grandmas and grandpas were so excited to see the dogs perform. I don’t think I’ll ever forget this kind woman’s wrinkled and knotted-with-arthritis hands petting the top of the slick Dobie’s head and the dog standing there looking lovingly into her eyes. This was probably one of my earliest lessons of service and how time is the greatest gift given.

Naturally, when author Stacy Grover contacted me to take the photo for her book, 101 Creative Ideas For Animal Assisted Therapy, I was very excited and deeply honored. Stacy, along with her darling pups Cosita and Liberty, spend countless hours volunteering their time in various therapy sessions. These experiences lead Stacy to write this wonderful book so others can experience the joy that comes from animal assisted therapy.

Stacy is truly beautiful on the outside but more importantly, genuinely beautiful on the inside.

Oh my gosh, this image cracks me up! Can’t you just see Liberty telling Cosita, “um, well little one, I’m not quite sure what you’re doing here because this is my show.”

“Yes, see how lovely of a model I am?” LOL, I love it.

Tell me what you think! Isn’t that book the best ever and aren’t these pups SO cute?!

Until next time,
~Shay

Edited to add:

This comment came to me from a nice lady named Janice and it’s so great I thought I would post it here in addition to the comments area.:)

My daughter and I first learned about animal assisted therapy two years ago and were completely captivated by the idea. After doing research into credible organizations, we contacted Therapy Animals of Utah to learn how to become qualified as therapy animal handlers. Stacy trained us. We’ve accompanied her on visits, and I’m telling you that she is amazing. She is one of the kindest, most giving people I know. She and her dogs melt the hearts of those she visits. I can’t wait to get her book in my hands and learn how to become just like her! Animal therapy work can be done with just about any animal including horses, mice, rabbits, birds, cats, dogs, etc. Therapy Animals of Utah is always looking for more volunteers, so if you are interested in learning more, go to their website: http://therapyanimalsutah.org/

Alette - WOW!!!! Need I say more??
Shay these are awesome. And Cosita and Liberty are beautiful :)
Thanks for sharing

xx

Stacy - Thanks so much Shay. You did a fabulous job on these. I am so impressed that you captured the details of both a white and a black dog in the same shot, while I still look normally colored! Normally when a Liberty is included in a picture, she just looks like a big black blob, but you really captured both of their expressions and their personalities…thanks so much!

Cindy - What a fun project! I love the puppy shots, they are both so cute!
