Pet Hummingbird

Last week I closed my garage door for the night like I always do and went on with my nightly routine. The following day Mike and our friend went into the garage to do boy stuff (work on our old classic Bronco) but instead they found a squatter….a little hummingbird. I think he had flown into the garage and couldn’t figure out how to get out, and then I had trapped him inside when I closed the door the previous night. Poor lil guy.

When we found him the next day he was in sorry shape. His flying was labored and reeeally slow. In fact, we couldn’t even hear the hum of his wings flapping!

We have a hummingbird feeder in our backyard so I ran to grab it. As soon as I stepped in the garage he flew right over and started pigging out. He didn’t even care that I was still holding the feeder in my hand. I had my friend take over holding the feeder and grabbed my camera to get some shots of the little fella.

After he was feeling better (at least he looked like he was feeling better) he decided the fishing pole was his perch. He stayed there on his perch, next to the food, the whole night.

I left the garage door open all night hoping he’d find his way out, but the next day he still was there (although the hum of his wings had returned and he was flying really well). His belly was SO fat too; I think he had drunk as much nectar as he could possibly hold. LOL

He kept flying around our garage ceiling so I thought he couldn’t quite figure out how to get out (the ceiling is quite a bit higher than the door opening). So I took the feeder and moved it close to the opening of the door hoping it would give him an incentive to fly by the opening.

Guess what? It worked! I went out a hour or two later and our little hummingbird friend was gone.

Wendy Hosch - Wow Shay what an incredible story. I have a huge soft spot for hummingbirds since they were my late mom’s favorite animal. It brought tears to my ears to read how you helped this little one so thank you :) And the pictures are amazing, he was so precious.

Shay - Thanks for the tips Sheri!

Sheri Williamson - A great rescue story, Shay, and it sounds like it was just in the nick of time! Things usually don’t turn out so well for young hummingbirds that get into trouble – this one was really lucky.

If you have an automatic garage door opener, he might have been lured inside by the red emergency handle (thinking it was a flower or feeder). Covering the handle with tape in a less attractive color can reduce the chance of a repeat of this near-tragedy.

You can also help hummingbirds every day of the season by feeding them just simple sugar water – 1 part sugar to 3 or 4 parts water, without food coloring or other artificial chemicals that might overload the systems of tiny birds that can drink 3 to 5 times their weight in liquid in a day.

Alette - Wow Shay what a wonderful story and those photos are awesome. We do not have hummingbirds overhere, so to see one so upclose just sitting still, just awesome :)
